Bonfire Night is the night that we remember how Guy Fawkes and a small group of other terrorists tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament and failed. They put loads of gunpowder underneath the building and got arrested as they were leaving.

Guy then was hung, had his chest cut open and was cut into pieces. (Hung, drawn and quartered).

So yeah, the bonfire is significant because it is on which people used to "Burn the Guy", which involved making a Guy Fawkes model ( Kind of like a scarecrow) and burning it on the fire. The fireworks represent the explosions that could have happened on the the day of the gunpowder plot.
